International Community Development Lab [ICDL]

a global community development initiative

ICDL:   [Overview]   [Initiative Model]   [Projected Benefits]   [Candidate Cities]

The International Community Development Lab [ICDL] sets out to bring together the key citizenry and stakeholders in business, education, civic organization, and government from communities worldwide to discuss and design paths for future development.  This endeavor is expected to yield significant information not only as to the community development needs around the world, but also the possible solutions.  This initiative will prove particularly useful during the recent times of worldwide economic crisis.

The ICDL was launched in 2006 after the successful Community Development Lab [CDL] model was turned into an international initiative that would select major cities from around the world to participate in an international version of the model.  Planning for this international initiative in conjunction with diverse partners began in March of 2007.  The initiative is expected to be completed in 5 phases.  The first three phases will select cities from different regions around the world to host the ICDL at a local level.  The fourth and fifth phases will take the ICDL to a regional and international level by bringing the selected cities together both regionally and internationally.

  • Phase 1:  First Group of Cities (Local Level ICDL)

  • Phase 2:  Second Group of Cities (Local Level ICDL)

  • Phase 3:  Third Group of Cities (Local Level ICDL)

  • Phase 4:   Regional Level ICDL

  • Phase 5:   International Level ICDL

To be selected as a host city of the ICDL is competitive.  Over 250 cities from around the world have been considered, only a select few have been selected as candidates to host the first phase of this endeavor.

The ICDL's goals are:

  • To engage the various stakeholders of local communities worldwide to analyze how to best achieve community development

  • To utilize the participatory model of the CDL to engage in strategic communication/planning in communities internationally

  • To effectively analyze a community's collective future

  • To facilitate a productive exchange of ideas that may evolve and take shape into community missions

  • To develop a strategic plan with measurable benchmarks and provisions for implementation for communities worldwide

  • To create an international network of individuals, entities & organizations dedicated to the strategic development of their communities
